چکیده

The important and fundamental works of Quincke, Hardy, McC. Lewis, Morgan, and lately Harkins and his collaborators have thrown much light on the behavior of liquids at interfaces, and it may seem hardly necessary to develop a new method in order to study this phenomenon, as those existing have reached a high degree of accuracy. However, if the values of the interfacial tensions of pure liquids have been well established by these investigators and others, the changes of the interfacial tension due to adsorption in function of t ime--a phenomenon similar to that first studied in our laboratoryl--have not, to our knowledge, been studied so far, for lack of proper technique. Consequently, considering the number of new phenomena which were brought to light by the use of the tensiometer first described in this Journal 6 years ago 2 we thought it might be of interest to devise a similar instrument with which measurements of interracial tension could be made in a few seconds, conveniently, in any laboratory, to 0.1 dyne. Our first idea was to utilize the tensiometer as it actually exists on the market, with perhaps a slight modification of the platinum ring. However, as the ring can only be pulled upwards, it limits the measurements for water interfaces, to liquids floating on water; i.e., having a specific gravity < 1. In order to render the instrument universal, it was decided to fix the ring to a rigid support, so that it could be pressed down by means of the torsion wire, as well as pulled

Controlled jamming of particle-laden interfaces using a spinning drop tensiometer.

When particles adsorb at a fluid/fluid interface at a sufficiently high concentration, the interface loses mobility and displays solidlike characteristics, a phenomenon called "interfacial jamming". Jamming can arrest interfacial tension-driven morphological coarsening in liquid/liquid or gas/liquid systems and therefore stabilize two phase morphologies with unusual interfacial shapes, for exam...

Adsorption of Intan-100 at the Bitumen/aqueous Solution Interface Studied by Spinning Drop Tensiometry

We present an experimental study on the adsorption behaviour of Intan-100, a nonionic surfactant, at the bitumen/water interface when the density difference between the two phases is increased by diluting the crude oil with 10% Xylene by weight or using heavy water (Deuterium Oxide) as the aqueous phase. Their equilibrium interfacial tension, surface excess and critical micelle concentration of...

Ultralow interfacial tension in enhanced oil recovery (EOR)

Increasing energy demands require improved methods for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Chemical EOR methods are most promising for maximum oil recovery, but, so far, limited due to high costs of chemicals and environmental concerns. Therefore, there is a huge interest in optimizing procedures for chemical EOR that minimize the amount of chemicals needed and rely on natural compounds, thus decreasi...

Surface tension measurement techniques of magnetic fluids at an interface between different fluids using perpendicular field instability

Two measurement techniques to determine the surface tension of ferrofluids using the perpendicular field instability are described. Four ferrofluid layers were examined with magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the surface of s1d oil-based ferrofluid in air; s2d water-based ferrofluid in air, s3d oil-based ferrofluid, and s4d fluorocarbon-based ferrofluid, both below a blend of 50% n-Propy...

Microfluidic sensor for dynamic surface tension measurement.

A novel microfluidic sensor for measuring dynamic gas-liquid interfacial tension is reported. The device consists of a microfluidic chip with a microchannel network and an optical detection system. The sample is introduced into a main channel, while air is injected through a T-junction. Owing to the fixed flow rate ratio used for the sensor, surface tension is the only parameter determining bub...
